Resumo
This article deals with field research carried out based on the application of ethnomathematics as a pedagogical approach in Youth and Adult Education (EJA). The objective is to understand how ethnomathematics is present in teaching in Youth and Adult Education in the municipality of Santa Maria da Boa Vista – PE. The article is based on the principles of qualitative research, with two mathematics teachers who teach at EJA as collaborators. The instruments used for information collection were observation and semi-structured interviews. As a result, it was found that ethnomathematics is not fully implemented in public schools but is present in the practices developed by teachers who work in EJA. In addition, the mathematical contents are worked through a diversified pedagogical approach, however, most of the time they are not based on the needs of the students. In other words, the pedagogical strategies used can be innovative and varied, but if the content is not aligned with the realities and interests of the students, the teaching may not reach its full potential, which limits engagement and learning effectiveness.
