Resumo
This study aims to comparatively investigate pedagogical practices and student performance in mathematics education in rural and urban schools. The research uses a mixed-method approach, collecting data through a questionnaire administered to 6th-grade students and interviews with teachers in these students’ classes, who work and study in rural and urban schools. The results reveal significant disparities in mathematics performance between urban and rural students, as well as the structural conditions of the institutions, with precariousness being more pronounced in rural schools. However, common aspects observed were teachers’ preference for traditional teaching methodologies over innovative ones, as well as a lack of continuing education specifically tailored to the context in which they work. Rural students and teachers are often the most disadvantaged, facing declining math performance, very poor infrastructure, and many other areas that require improvement. However, urban students and teachers also face challenges to overcome, particularly in continuing education. Therefore, it is necessary to focus on the necessary improvements to provide equitable education, tailored to the needs of teachers and students, regardless of whether they are from rural or urban areas, while also ensuring quality teaching and learning for all.
