Resumo
Abstract: the article “The Challenges in Teaching Mathematics to Students with Hearing Impairment” addresses the specific difficulties faced by deaf students in learning mathematics. The main barrier identified is communication, since mathematical language is highly symbolic and depends heavily on oral understanding. The lack of adequate resources and a shortage of trained teachers are also highlighted as significant challenges. Strategies such as the use of qualified interpreters, visual materials and assistive technologies are discussed as ways to improve teaching-learning for these students. Furthermore, initiatives are proposed to raise awareness among the educational community and develop inclusive pedagogical methods that meet the specific needs of deaf students in teaching mathematics. The research is bibliographic in nature and, to achieve the proposed approach, it covers the following topics: Deaf education in Brazil; The diversity of deaf culture; Inclusion of deaf people in regular classrooms; The mathematics teacher and the importance of interpreter assistance in the classroom; The main challenges faced by teachers in the classroom when teaching mathematics to hearing-impaired students; and The adaptation of content and methodologies used in mathematics for the learning process of the deaf.
