Alguns fatos históricos sobre π e e

Resumo

This dissertation aims to investigate and present historical aspects, fundamental properties, and mathematical applications of the numbers π and e, two of the most important constants in Mathematics. Initially, a historical overview of the number π is provided, covering its earliest approximations in ancient civilizations such as Babylon and Egypt, the contributions of classical and modern mathematicians, and the advances achieved through computational methods in the twentieth century. Subsequently, the origin and development of the number e are discussed, emphasizing its relationship with logarithms, exponential growth, and the studies of Bernoulli, Euler, and other relevant mathematicians. The work also presents formal definitions, proofs of the irrationality of π and e, and their fundamental properties, including their occurrence in infinite series, infinite products, and notable identities such as Euler’s formula. Furthermore, different historical and analytical methods for computing π are examined, as well as applications of these constants in scientific and technological contexts. Finally, a didactic sequence is proposed for Mathematics teaching, aiming to highlight the role of the history of Mathematics as a pedagogical tool and to promote meaningful and contextualized learning in basic education, in accordance with the objectives of PROFMAT.
