Resumo

Developing students' reasoning and sense making should be a primary focus of mathematics instruction (Battista, 2017). Emphasizing students' reasoning to develop deep mathematical understanding permeates current mathematics position statements. The authors have found that using puzzles in a mathematics classroom provides an opportunity for teachers to center students' reasoning in their learning experiences. Depending on the type of puzzle and how a learner engages when solving it, a puzzle can support and help develop students; inductive and deductive reasoning (Wanko, 2010, 2017). This articles describes how middle school mathematics teacher initially challenged their students to reason inductively by making conjectures based on their notices and observations of a newly introduced puzzle, so that the students could determine the rules of the puzzle. Once the students determined the goal and the rules of the puzzle, the teacher then challenged the students to use deductive reasoning or step- by- step logical reasoning to find a unique solution. This approach of inductive reasoning followed by deductive reasoning supports the geometric habit of mind, in which students are challenged to balance exploration and reflection (Driscoll et al., 2007). The idea is that deductive puzzle-solving activities, like those that are provided in the classroom vignettes that follow, give students a structure or an outline of what it means to construct a mathematical argument.
