Resumo

Because research on student reasoning during modeling is well-established, the future of modeling education lies in identifying instructional supports that positively impact students’ modeling competencies. This paper references a mixed-methods study investigating the role of scaffolding in supporting undergraduate STEM majors construct models of dynamical systems. A set of modeling task-based interviews were analyzed qualitatively according to two descriptive frameworks and then quantized to strengthen the qualitative impressions with quantitative precision. Four innovative visualization techniques were developed to communicate the findings: a competency rose to visualize the distribution of scaffolding moves across stages of the modeling cycle, ternary graphs to represent scaffolding moves as composition vectors, caterpillar plots to illustrate which moves promote (or suppress) which modeling competencies, and azulejos plots to explain nuanced influence within categories of scaffolding moves. These graphs build a bridge between the richness of qualitative data and the precision of quantitative data, thereby enabling communication of quantitative findings about qualitative data to a broader audience.
