Resumo

This paper introduces the fields of ethnotopology and ethnometrology as promising research programmes for cross-cultural ethnomathematics research. Ethnotopology studies culturally embedded topological practices such as knotting, string figures, and cord-based technologies, and analyses their mathematical features and deep historical significance. Ethnometrology examines traditional and informal measurement systems, including body-based, proportional, and other units of measure, studying culturally contextual methods for quantifying the world. These culturally ubiquitous practices provide a valuable window into the cultural evolution of mathematical systems and help understand how foundational mathematical concepts have developed and diversified across human societies. They also present a variety of avenues for applying computational methods, bridging gaps between digital humanities and ethnomathematics research. Yet, significant challenges remain, particularly with regards to the quality and accessibility of ethnographic data. This paper emphasises the need for globally representative, community-driven databases for the ethical study of endangered cultural heritage and enable cross-cultural research. Furthermore, I discuss how these tangible mathematical practices offer rich opportunities for culturally inclusive, hands-on approaches to mathematics education.
