Resumo
Mistakes are an inherent and unavoidable part of the teaching and learning process. The act of making mistakes can bring about a range of negative repercussions, both internal (in the sense of arousing emotions such as shame, anger, frustration, etc.) and external, in the student’s interactions with peers and teachers. However, mistakes can be viewed either as evidence of a failed process or (as Thomas Edison once put it) as a way of learning how not to proceed. This work focuses on the latter perspective—that is, on using errors in Mathematics teaching as a learning tool, drawing lessons from mistakes by carefully investigating them to prevent recurrence. There are classifications for various types of errors; here, we will address the following: interpretation errors, calculation errors, reasoning errors, and conceptual (mathematical) errors. Throughout this study, we will discuss these themes and explore how investigating mistakes can improve the understanding of certain topics within combinatorial analysis. This work culminates in an educational product titled "Descombinados: um livreto de problemas matemáticos quase resolvidos", which practically applies the ideas discussed here in and presents a didactic sequence to guide the use of this educational resource in the classroom.
