Resumo

Students across the country share a common mathematics experience: taking a test, waiting to see a number at the top of the page that claims to measure their learning, and too often using that number to judge their own worth. The pressure to measure student progress often leads educators to rely on tools that prioritize efficiency over insight. However the current design of many assessments does not offer students the resources to understand their own learning (Levitan & Munyan- Penney, 2024). In this article, the authors address the persistent use of off-the-shelf assessment products for measuring growth and offer a more humanizing alternative that centers on students.
