Resumo
This study examined whether the van Hiele teaching phases, originally developed for geometry teaching can contribute to algebraic learning and retention. In a pre-post-delayed study involving 84 Nigerian senior year 1 school students (ages 14 to 15), a teaching sequence structured around the van Hiele phases (information, guided orientation, explicitation, free orientation, and integration) was implemented during regular lessons. Parallel algebra tasks at three time-points were scored with the Structure of the Observed Learning Outcome (SOLO) model and analysed using a partial-credit Rasch model to obtain individual measures, followed by repeated-measures tests of change and retention. The results indicate that students’ scores increased from pre to post test and the improvements were sustained at the delay test (pre→post p < 0.001, post→delay p < 0.05 ). A similar change pattern was observed across attainment bands for lower- and higher-attaining students with no interaction with time. Trends across gender were generally comparable over time; however, a significant interaction between gender and time at the delay test suggested longer-term consolidation among female students ( p < 0.001). Combining van Hiele phases and SOLO levels offers a testable account for algebraic conceptual development, however, being an exploratory study lacking a control group, the findings provide a foundation for design-based experimental follow-up, inform curriculum and instructional design, encourage evidence-based assessment, and contribute to the overall advancement of algebraic teaching and learning.
