Resumo

Ethnomathematics (EM) evolved outside of Europe as a form of postcolonialism.It is a direct challenge to eurocentrism (Powell, & Frankenstein, 1997).It also disrupts and alters the very conception of mathematics as a body of knowledge.Mathematical thinking in an EM context no longer refers to established ways of being and acting.EM destabilizes the authority to recognize, explain, understand, use or make mathematics.Growing out of the lived world of non-Europeans, EM questions how histories pre-suppose what counts as mathematics knowledge, and challenges the dominant paradigm of history and its hubris in classifying and prioritizing knowledge.For Ubi D' Ambrosio (1985), considered by many as the intellectual father of EM, EM exists at the confluence of the history of mathematics and cultural anthropology, going beyond the dichotomy of western (academic) and non-western (practical) mathematics.Now the question is how to work with EM in the European context.As Stathopoulou describes in her article in this issue, one version of EM within Europe would be self-critique, which goes beyond new definitions of mathematics and mathematics education toward a fully reconstructed and decolonized collection of practices (Iseke-Barnes, 2000).The abyssal line is not only between European cultures and institutions on the one hand, and those of the global South on the other;
