Resumo
This research paper aims at exploring the relationship between problem solving in Mathematics Education and the development of higher order thinking skills. Therefore, it was conceptualized what higher-order thinking skills are and how they can be developed in Mathematics classes based on the problem-solving approach. In order to illustrate how problem-solving approach can contribute to the development of these skills, two situations were carried out in the classroom. It is about a research conducted with sixth and eighth grade students attending elementary schools who used problem-solving skills as a learning strategy. This is a descriptive–interpretive qualitative research method, which used Discourse Textual Analysis procedures in the treatment of data, which consider the written (and/or drawn) resolution of the problems proposed to the students. It was evident that problem-solving approach can contribute to the development of higher order thinking skills, such as the conversion of records (written-visual), the comparison of different statements, the elaboration of justifications and proofs, mathematical communication and the creative thinking development. Likewise, the type of problem to be worked on is a factor that can decisively contribute to the success of the proposal.
